Yellow Candle Project

The Baltimore Zionist District is honored to bring for a third year the Yellow Candle Project, which originally was created and distributed in the United Kingdom to the Baltimore community. Yellow Candle is a practical and informal educational tool to remember those murdered during the Holocaust. The candle comes with a card displaying the name, age, date and place of death of a victim of the Holocaust. The youngest victim being remembered is

1-year-old and the eldest is 82.

We hope you will join Yellow Candle Project and Baltimore Zionist District as we come together to remember the six million who perished in the Holocaust, by lighting the candle on Yom HaShoah eve, April 27th, 2022.

What is Yellow Candle?

  • A simple, practical tool for the Jewish community and beyond, to remember Jewish victims of the Holocaust on the occasion of Yom HaShoah

  • Every candle comes with a small card that carries the name of someone who perished; many of the names are of children

  • A unique educational opportunity which brings learning about the Holocaust directly into the home of the participants

The candle will be lit on the eve of Yom HaShoah. Every candle comes in a bag with a small card that carries the name of someone who perished in the Shoah, many of them children. People are encouraged to take a photograph of the candle lighting with the name they are lighting it for and post it on social media using the hashtag #YellowCandleBZD and #YellowCandle.

With the help of our sponsors, you will be able to receive the candle at no cost. If you are interested in donating towards this project, please visit: https://kindest.com/444384-bzd-yellow-candle-project-2022.

The Yellow Candle social media campaign has been very successful in the last couple years;

the hashtag #YellowCandle trended #1 on Twitter on Yom HaShoah eve, 2020 and engaged people across the community

including celebrities and other public figures.

See examples here

This will be the sixth year of the initiative, which in year one saw 3,000 candles distributed and last year grew to 100,000.

The project was managed by volunteers who raised the funds to distribute the candles free of any cost. This year with Maccabi GB now handling the supply chain and distribution we have 1,000 candles to distribute to our community in Baltimore. The Baltimore Zionist District is proud to be a U.S. contributing organization who will be helping to distribute these candles throughout our community.

The Yellow Candle Project also gives families the opportunity to speak about the Holocaust perhaps the first time and raise awareness of what can happen if antisemitism goes unchallenged.

“As those that suffered the Holocaust first hand but survived begin to pass on, it is vital that we find new and innovative ways of perpetuating the memory of the holocaust and Yellow Candle is a wonderfully simple way to do this on an annual basis. Maccabi GB are proud to be associated with Yellow Candle."

Maccabi GB CEO Martin Berliner

“The yellow candle project is a simple but incredibly powerful and poignant way to remember individual victims of the holocaust. It has grown incredibly since its launch in this country two years ago and we are now delighted to be working with Maccabi GB who are helping to take this project to the next level where this year

we will light 25,000 candles.”

- Yellow Candle Founding Committee Member, Paul Harris

The Yellow Candle Project has been incredibly successful in preserving the memory of individuals who perished in the holocaust. As the last survivors leave us it’s all the more important that we keep those memories alive.  It’s wonderful that Maccabi GB are partnering with us to ensure its position as a significant holocaust education initiative.”

- Yellow Candle Founding Committee Member, Nick Gender
